LARS Augmented Reality System
The Low Cost Augmented Reality System (LARS) is a low cost augmented reality head mounted display (HMD) system that enhances dismounted soldier training by simulating realistic battlefield situations and enabling instructors to give soldiers direct, real-time feedback.
Instead of training soldiers with props, actors, and equipment such as aircraft and tanks that are not only expensive, but also in limited supply, LARS allows soldiers to be trained in any environment – including in the field – using only an HMD.
LARS provides a high resolution image across a very large field of view using SA Photonics’ innovative prism design. Because of the prism eyepiece, LARS is both low cost and extremely rugged. LARS can also accommodate user preferences. A flip-up visor is available to control light in bright ambient environments, and LARS has adjustments for fore/aft, as well as for vertical and interpupillary distance, ensuring that it always fits.
Although initially designed for the training of Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) personnel, who direct the action of combat aircraft in close air support, LARS can improve the training of any dismounted soldier, regardless of their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).
